Captain – Port of Virginia – USCG 100 Ton Master or Greater (Day Boat Operation)

Marine Oil Service, a Norfolk, VA based day boat operation, is seeking a USCG Licensed 100 Ton Master for a full time position.
General Job Description:
Responsible for the safe transportation of the assigned tank vessel(s) and for the safety of the cargo, vessel(s), and crew.
Required to perform administrative and supervisory functions.

Job Responsibilities And Duties:
The job responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Stands wheelhouse watches underway. Assist the tankerman when preparing for and conducting transfer operations.
  • Perform the duties of the Vessel Security Officer as outlined in the security plan.
  • Direct crew in performance of drills.
  • Determine the need for and assign lookouts as necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and company policies and regulations.
  • Prepare, monitor, and update vessel work lists and delivery schedules.
  • Ensure all crewmen are performing their duties.

Skills And Abilities:

  • Must be proficient with a twin screw tank vessel.
  • Must have 2 years minimum of two years of experience operating vessels of this class.
  • Must be able to start up and operate all engine room and auxiliary machinery. Must have basic understanding of machinery.
  • Operations and be able to troubleshoot routine engine problems.
  • Must be able to direct, evaluate, and correct performance of subordinates.
  • Must be capable of training Tankerman and deckhand in the safe performance of their duties.
  • Must be able to fairly evaluate subordinates.
  • Ability to learn and make application of safety awareness, injury prevention, and fire fighting.
  • Conduct inspections and monitor vessel maintenance activities.
  • Prepare written reports per company and regulatory agency directives.
  • Must be able to read, speak, and understand English over the telephone and/or radio.

Specialized Skills Required:

  • Must be able to perform the functions set forth and be physically fit enough to pull heavy lines/hoses, lift, carry heavy items, climb onto vessels and barges and up and down ladders, and bending and twisting during vessel docking operations.
  • Must be intimately familiar with the Vessel Response Plans (VRP) and oil spill response procedures.

Equipment And Machinery Used:

  • Work aboard vessels using heavy lines, winches, mechanical tools for repairs. Be able to operate cargo pumps and auxiliary machinery.

Job Conditions And Environment:

  • Must be able to work independently and without direct supervision.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions (rain, ice, snow, heat, wind, heavy seas, etc.)
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
  • Must not be afraid of heights.
  • Must posse valid state driver’s license.

Education/training:

  • Must have a valid Coast Guard license, minimum 100GT inland with a Tankerman’s endorsement for Grade (B) and lower.
  • Must have TWIC.
  • Vessel Security Officer preferred.
  • Must have CPR training.

Job Type: Full-time

General Hours: 07:30-15:30 M-F with the ability to work nights and weekends if necessary.

CDL Truck Driver

Are you an over the road driver who is tired of being gone at night? Tired of doing the same thing every day?

Marine Oil Service has a job opening for a CDL Driver. We are looking for a “jack of all trades” person to add to our team. This position offers the opportunity to spend part of your week driving and part of your week working in our warehouse and on our vessels. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to making local package oil deliveries, over the road / overnight (US East coast) deliveries, receiving inbound product, and picking orders with FIFO management. This position offers the opportunity to drive many different trucks as deliveries dictates: pickup, box, stake, 4,000 gallon straight truck wagon and Class A Tank Trailers & Dry Vans. Hazardous endorsement not needed. Room to advance via sailing on one of our tank barges as deckhand and could work all the way up to 100 master.

  • Class A preferred with at least 2 years of commercial driving experience; Class B considered
  • Must be TWIC card eligible.
  • Forklift experience is a plus.
  • Diesel Mechanic Experience is a plus.
  • Clean driving record.
  • Must successfully pass pre-employment drug screen and background check.
  • Must enjoy variety of work; everyday is different!
